How does a life take shape while its deepest questions remain open?
We work, care for others, make commitments, and respond to what each day requires. Often, we do so while still trying to understand what our lives should ultimately be directed towards.
I’m Arlen Vare, an independent writer working across philosophy, public life, and Christian thought. My writing examines how finite human beings understand and organise their lives under conditions they cannot fully control.
If you’re new here, these three essays offer a way into that inquiry.
Three essays to begin with
Read them in order, or begin with the question that matters most to you.
01 — What must we understand before asking how to live?
A short introduction to the inquiry behind this site. It asks how our mortality, dependence, and relation to time shape the question of how we should live.
02 — Which possibilities can we actually choose?
An alternative may exist without being within a person’s reach. This essay examines how knowledge, resources, abilities, and circumstances shape the choices we can make, and what that means for responsibility.
03 — What remains possible after an action cannot be undone?
Our actions become part of a history we must continue to live with. This essay considers how responsibility, repair, and change remain possible when a return to the original moment is no longer available.
The book behind the inquiry
Existential Organization
Existential Organization brings these questions into a sustained examination of how everyday demands and repeated commitments give a finite life its form.
It asks how a life can contain love, responsibility, and purpose while its ultimate meaning and direction remain unresolved.
